Acamprosate

Acamprosate is used in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal. This medication can be combined with therapy to promote abstinence and to restore chemical balance within the brain of the recovering alcoholic.

Actiq

Also more commonly known as Fentanyl Citrate, Actiq is the brand name for a powerful medication used in the treatment of pain. This medication is often prescribed to cancer patients but may also be used in the treatment of chronic pain associated with other serious medical disorders or diseases.

Adderall

Adderall is prescribed to patients for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Taken as prescribed, the medication is relatively safe but when Adderall is abused it can be habit-forming and may lead to physical dependence. Side effects can be difficult to treat and may require ongoing medical care.

Alcohol is one of the most widely abused substances in the US accounting for millions of overdoses, accidents and fatal consequences each year. Made from fermented sugars, starch and yeast, alcohol depresses the CNS and is quickly absorbed into the body resulting in an array of side effects. When abused, alcohol is habit forming and can cause a number of symptoms including withdrawal which may require medical treatment.

Alprazolam is an anxiety medication that is often prescribed for patients suffering from various types of panic disorder or generalized anxiety disorder. This medication is also used to treat certain forms of depression. Alprazolam is a habit forming medication that can lead to serious symptoms of withdrawal with abrupt cessation.

Ambien is a sleep medication that is commonly prescribed to patients for the short-term treatment of insomnia. Otherwise known by its brand name, zolpidem, Ambien initiates sleep in those who cannot otherwise fall asleep easily. Unfortunately, this drug is also habit forming and should not be used long-term.

Amobarbital

Often given to patients prior to surgical procedure, amobarbital is an injection drug that can reduce anxiety and promote sleep. The sedative effects of the drug can last for hours, but with repeat use there is a risk of physical dependence.

Amphetamine is a psychoactive stimulant that affects the CNS by increasing the release of dopamine and norepinephrine into the brain. Although these medications can be prescribed for narcolepsy and similar sleep disorders, many people also abuse amphetamine to get high. Results can be deadly.

Amytal

Amytal is a sedative that is prescribed to patients who have severe insomnia which is not easily treated using other medications. It is generally only prescribed for short periods of time due to the habit forming nature of the drug.

Anexsia

Anexsia is a combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen similar to Lortab or Vicodin. It is a narcotic that can be used in the treatment of moderate to severe pain, but it does carry the potential to cause physical dependence when taken repeatedly or without a prescription.

Antabuse

Antabuse is the brand name for disulfiram, a medication that is used to reduce the 'positive' effects of alcohol. Given to recovering alcoholics, this medication will actually result in symptoms of withdrawal or discomfort when alcohol is used and it effectively helps to reduce relapse.

Ativan

Ativan, also known as lorazepam, is an anxiety medication that is commonly prescribed to those suffering from a range of anxiety disorders including generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and several other conditions such as IBS. In controlled, moderate doses, Ativan is a relatively safe medication, but when abused it can be habit forming and dangerous.

Avinza

Avinza is a pain relieving medication that is made up of morphine sulfate. It provided extended-release pain relief when administered daily to patients suffering from various types of chronic pain such as lower-back pain or arthritis.

Biocodone

A brand name for hydrocodone, Biocodone is prescribed to treat patients suffering from moderate to severe pain. When abused, like other hydrocodone products, Biocodone can lead to physical dependence, addiction and withdrawal.

Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is prescribed to patients who are addicted to heroin or other opiates as a means of controlling cravings and symptoms of withdrawal. It can be taken orally to help thwart withdrawal symptoms.

Butalbital

This medication is a barbiturate that can be prescribed to treat various types of anxiety. It is a combination of acetaminophen and caffeine that may also be used in the treatment of chronic headaches.

Butorphanol

Commonly used in the treatment of pain, Butorphanol can also be prescribed for the treatment of migraine headaches. This medications tends to be prescribed to women over men simply because it is generally more effective for females.

Campral

The brand name for a medication used to help people avoid drinking alcohol, Campral is also more widely known as acamprosate. It will not stop symptoms of withdrawal but it can return balance of function to the brain.

Carisoprodol

A muscle relaxing medication that is commonly given to patients following injury or sprain of the muscles, Carisoprodol can be taken orally but may cause nausea or upset stomach if taken without food.

Chlordiazepoxide

This medication is used in the treatment of various effects of alcohol withdrawal and can also be provided in the treatment of IBS. It must be taken regularly in order to take effect but such use can be habit-forming.

Clonazepam

This medication is used to control anxiety and seizures. Clonazepam works by reducing the activity in the brain responsible for panic, fear and anxiety.

Clonidine

Used in the treatment of ADHD as well as in severe cases of dysmenorrhea, Clonidine can also be prescribed in the early treatment of opiate withdrawal to help ease symptoms. Taken orally it can effectively restore balance into the user’s life.

Concerta

This medication is prescribed in the treatment of attention deficit hyeractivity disorder. It can also be prescribed to treat narcolepsy.

Crack cocaine is a dangerous stimulant that is smoked to produce euphoric effects. It is highly habit-forming and will create lasting side effects for the user.

Crystal meth, also known as methamphetamine, is a dangerous stimulant which has the potential to create serious side effects for the user. Used regularly, this drug is very intoxicating and habit-forming.

Damason-P

This is a prescription painkiller that combines aspirin and hydrocodone. Commonly prescribed to patients who cannot take acetaminophen produce, it reduces pain, fever and inflammation but can be habit-forming when regularly used.

Darvocet

A powerful pain reliever that combines acetaminophen and propoxyphene, Darvocet is the brand name medication. It can be used to treat high fever, as well as moderate to severe pain. This drug has been removed from US distribution as of 2010.

Darvon

Darvon is a pain reliever that combines aspirin, propoxyphene and caffeine. As of 2010, this medication is no longer available in the United States.

Demerol

Demerol is a pain reliever which uses the active ingredient meperidine. Used in the treatment of severe pain, this drug acts similar to morphine.

Depade

Depade is a medication that is sometimes prescribed to those in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. An opiate antagonist, this drug reduces the effects of opiate analgesics and renders them undesirable.

Desoxyn

A medication that is very rarely prescribed, this is medical grade methamphetamine hydrochloride and is sometimes prescribed in the treatment of obesity or ADHD.

Dexedrine

Used in the treatment of ADHD, narcolepsy, and obesity, Dexedrine is a powerful amphetamine medication.

Dextroamphetamine

Used in the treatment of ADHD, this medication makes up 75% of the medication used in the common drug Adderall. It is also used to treat depression, obesity and narcolepsy.

Dextromethorphan (DXM)

This medication is found in many over-the-counter cough syrups and works by suppressing the area of the brain that is responsible for cough. It is an antitussive medication but can be tough on the stomach.

Dextropropoxyphene

Prescribed in the treatment of mild pain, dextropropoxyphene is an opioid that is often used in place of Darvon or Darvocet since those two drugs have been removed from U.S. distribution.

Dextrostat

A brand name product for dextroamphetamine, Dextrostat is used to treat ADHD and obesity. It is an amphetamine which can be habit-forming.

Di-Gesic

Marketed as Di-Gesic, this medication is an analgesic that utilizes the drug dextropropoxyphene to help reduce pain but is no longer approved for medical use in the U.S. or Europe.

Diazepam

A medication used to treat seizure, anxiety and muscle spasms, diazepam is a habit-forming medication that may also be prescribed to patients who undergo alcohol detox.

Dicodid

The brand name for hydrocodone, this drug is prescribed in the treatment of chronic or severe cough, as well as moderate to severe pain.

The brand name pain-reliever for the mixture that contains the active ingredient hydromorphone, Dilaudid is a habit-forming medication that increases tolerance to pain but can quickly lead to physical dependence.

Disulfiram

Prescribed to patients during alcoholism treatment, Disulfiram eliminates the side effects of alcohol withdrawal including headache and vomiting.

Duodin

A mixture of hydrocodone, Duodin is used in the treatment of pain and chronic cough. It can be taken orally.

Duragesic

A powerful opiate analgesic pain reliever, duragesic is generally available in a stick-on patch that provides up to three steady days of pain relief for patients.

Duramorph

Morphine that is injected is called duramorph. This powerful opiate provides pain relief to those who have been injured. It is commonly used in a hospital setting.

Ecstasy, also known as “molly” or “MDMA”, is a synthetic street drug that produces a sense of euphoria and feelings of emotional contentment. Taken regularly, it can cause adverse reactions and may pose a potential for overdose.

Fioricet

Ketamine

LSD

Lortab

A Hydrocodone and acetaminophen mixture, Lortab is the brand name for a powerful pain reliever that is prescribed to patients suffering from mild, moderate or severe pain.

Luminal

This sleep medication is used in the treatment of seizures and has powerful sedative effects.

MS Contin

The medication that is effectively morphine which can be orally consumed, MS Contin comes in both liquid and pill form to be swallowed for the treatment of severe pain.

MSIR

Orlaam
